Timothy Stevens OBE has many years of museum
experience. Having gained his degree in Modern History at Hertford College,
Oxford, he studied History of Art at the Courtauld Institute, London University,
leaving in 1964 with an Academic Diploma to join the Walker Art Gallery,
Liverpool, as Assistant Keeper of British Art. He was promoted first to
Keeper of Foreign Art before becoming Deputy Director in 1969 and Director
from 1970 to 1974 when he was made Director of Art Galleries (Walker Art
Gallery, Lady Lever Art Gallery, Sudley Art Gallery and The Oratory) for
Merseyside County Council. In 1986 he became Deputy Directory of National
Museums and Art Galleries on Merseyside before leaving Liverpool in 1987
to be Keeper of Art at the National Museums and Galleries of Wales, where
he oversaw the construction of new art galleries, a post he maintained
until 1994 when he moved to London as Assistant Director (Collections)
at the Victoria and Albert Museum. He stayed at the V&A until January
2000.
Timothy Stevens joined the Gilbert Collection
in September 2000 and worked as Deputy Director, until being appointed
Director in 2002. He played a key role in developing the programme of
temporary exhibitions that complemented the permanent collection. He is
also a Trustee to the Board of the National Art Collections Fund.
